Starting editing

I've started editing and I am using a Apple Mac Book Pro and the software is Final Cut Pro. I have used it before so it was really just reminding myself of how to use it but I am also learning a lot more effects and different things possible in Final Cut Pro.

Whilst editing I realised that there was a lot of holes in my footage and some lyrics which needed to be performed I had no footage for so I will have to schedule one more and final shooting session in which I will gain all the missing footage which will help put my video together. In the meantime, I will continue editing to see what else is potentially missing and then I can make sure that I get all the footage I need.

More Filming!

I did some more filming today, the weather wasn't great so I wasn't able to go outside as much as I probably would have but I rescheduled my shots to be inside and did some rehearsals and re-thought some of my shots which didn't look as well as I thought. Nevertheless, I got a lot of filming done and some good shots so next will be editing.

Here's some shots of my filming:

First shoot of my Digipak!

I've started production of my Digipak and did a first photoshoot to test out lighting and try a variety of shots, I hope to do another photoshoot but here's a selection of my photos so far:

some of these pictures are slightly blurred and the lighting isn't as strong as I would like however, there are still some pictures which I like. Nevertheless, this served as a good practice shoot and I will add to my variety of images after my next shoot.

Possible fonts

I have been looking at possible fonts using DaFont.com, I have looked at a variety and narrowed it down to a final five fonts. Using these I will ask some people from my target audience about which ones they prefer and use that to help me decide the final font for my digipak.

Here are my options:

Digipak: Textual Analysis

Textual Analysis:

An African-American man with shoulder length black curly hair wearing a black jacket and pants adorned with buckles singing into a microphone with his eyes closed. He is holding the microphone stand with both hands. Bright stage lights are visible in the background.Micheal Jackson- This Is It

Michael Jackson, an American singer-songwriter most commonly referred to as 'The King of Pop'. His record labels include Steeltown, Motown, Epic, Legacy and later his own record company MJJ Productions.

When Michael Jackson was signed to Berry Gordon to Motown, he worked with the likes of Diana Ross and the Supremes, The Four Tops, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye.
MJJ Music Is an American record label that is owned by MJJ Productions Inc and founded by American entertainer Michael Jackson. It is distributed by Epic Records (for which Jackson recorded) and Work Records.
MJJ Music was founded in 1988. Jackson formed the label to help shape the talents of burgeoning artists.

As a musician, he ranged from Motown's dance fare and ballads to techno and house-edged new jack swing to work that incorporates both funk rhythms and hard rock guitar. Jackson's 1982 album Thriller is the best-selling album of all time. His other albums, including Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995), also rank among the world's best-selling. Jackson is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. He was also inducted into the Dance Hall of Fame as the first and only dancer from pop and rock music. Some of his other achievements include multiple Guinness World Records; 13 Grammy Awards as well as the Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award; 26 American Music Awards, more than any other artist, including the "Artist of the Century" and "Artist of the 1980s"; 13 number-one singles in the United States in his solo career, more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era; and the estimated sale of over 400 million records worldwide.Jackson has won hundreds of awards, making him the most-awarded recording artist in the history of popular music. In what would have been Jackson's 52nd birthday on August 29, 2010, he became the most downloaded artist of all time. Jackson constantly traveled the world attending events honoring his humanitarianism and the 2000 Guinness Book of Records recognized him for supporting 39 charities.

The packaging for Michael Jackson's This Is It is cardboard packaging and uses the traditional gatefold however to make it more modern the CD's go into little slots at the front and back of the case, either side of a booklet which includes both pictures from his This Is It show/ film and track listings of the CD's.

The front cover is quite plain but familiar as it links with the movie poster. It features a silhouette of Micheal Jackson which is filled with bright images from his live show which included all of the songs on this album. This pictures from his rehearsals of his upcoming tour is significant as it was said to be one of his most memorable tours and a part of music history forever (tickets sold out within a matter of minutes), this  is why the album is so important. The image of Micheal on the front portrays a 'typical Michael pose' and lives up to his name as the King of Pop. It also includes typical features of what Micheal would wear such as the one sparkly glove and the trilby hat. The bright background lighting which highlights the image of Micheal makes him seem as if he surrounded by smoke or in a spotlight making the image stand out and gives it an other worldly feel. The font is serif and the title of the album is larger than the rest of the writing on the cover, it is also in bold and in capitals. This is because it actually means what is says 'This Is It' as Micheal Jackson died before the show was able to start his tour. This makes this writing possibly the most important message on the cover.

The back of the album has a similar image to the front- still portraying a pose typical to MJ and filled with similar images from the show as the front. However, in this image he is a finishing pose, a famous pose by MJ in which he spins around and finishes pointing down and tilting his hat- a pose which would feature in the show. This could represent the end of his career and as he looks down it could signify him looking down after his death.

The digi-pak is a Deluxe 2 CD set which includes a 36-page booklet which includes more images from the show. CD 1 includes a range of 16 of MJ's greatest hits that would have featured in the show and in the running order of the live show. The last two songs on CD 1 are 2 new, unreleased songs created especially for the show. CD 2 has unreleased versions of some of his songs and a spoken poem which had never been heard before. On the back of the digi-pak it has a barcode and record label logo and a dedication to his children- 'This album is dedicated to Michael's children Prince Micheal, Paris and Prince Michael II "Blanket"'

The digi-pak is predominately image led and the only text seen is of the track listing and track information which uses the same small, standard text throughout. All the images are of the show, varying from the performances themselves to behind the scenes images and the band for the show. The images are exactly what you'd expect from a Micheal Jackson show and feature bright colors. There are some pictures which don't actually feature Micheal in them because it reflects the show as a whole therefore may include the dancers, band, crew of the director- Kenny Ortega.

The disk have a similar layout but opposite in color schemes, which creates a link  between them. These disk keep with the theme of the whole album and in terms on relating to other Micheal Jackson CD's this one can be seen to link to a previous digi-pak of MJ's in terms of color and matching disks.

To conclude, the set-up and layout of this digi-pak work well as it portrays MJ in a good way and encompasses everything he is about- it creates a good way and is designed to stand out and attract an audience. This is more simple as a design for a digi-pak, especially when compared to MJ's previous albums or any other digi-pak but it creates a peaceful and nostalgic feel to Micheal therefore succeeds in it's purpose.

Research of adverts!

As move into the design and productions of my advert I have done some research into existing artists adverts. The advert which I will create will be a poster for my artist's single/album. The general codes and conventions which I will need to include are:

- the artist
- the song/ album name
- the release date of the album
- could feature the CD cover somewhere on the poster.

The poster would normally be portrait but some artists have chosen to use landscape posters previously. These posters would usually feature in magazines or bus stops for example, given this I have decided that a portrait would be best suited for these locations and will provide optimum exposure for my artist and the upcoming CD.

Here are some adverts in the same genre as my artist:

Some artist's choose not to feature on there posters:

But I think this only works because Britney Spears is so established and this style of poster works with the theme of her album titles 'Circus'. As my artist is just starting off I feel as if it would be more beneficial for her to feature on the poster.

Rethinking of my narrative!

As I am doing more filming and thinking about how to bring my narrative to life in a way which is effective and will be understood by the audience I have realised that my narrative is too hard to convey on a small budget in approximately 4 minutes. Therefore I have decided to keep with the genre and my target audience and make the narrative more about a failed relationship this links much better with the genre and lyrics of the song and more easily understood visually, I can still use my storyboard as the majority of shots drafted on there will still apply but the storyline will just change slightly as a result of my filming experience so far and a development of my ideas!

More filming planned!!!

Tomorrow, I have scheduled for Patsy, who will be starring in my music video to come over and we can get some more filming done! I have decided to get some outdoor shots tomorrow which will be a combination of performance, narrative and general filler shots! We have had some bad weather lately so hopefully the weather is good enough so I can shoot as I'd like to use as much natural lighting as possible. We will be working in my house and around my house which means that we can use a variety of costumes and therefore get a variety of shots. I'm looking forward to getting as much shooting done as possible tomorrow and then finishing the rest of it round Patsy's house on Tuesday! Hopefully then I will have finished all the shots and will be able to start editing and watching my video come to life!!! Can't wait!!!

Font research!

I have begun to look at the production of my Digipak and started with the fonts which could be possibilities. I am currently using DaFont.com for ideas as to which type of font I want for the design of my Digipak.

By researching the different fonts available I have got an idea of the type of font that I want to use, the font which I envisage for my Digipak is sans serif and I want the font to be big and slightly rounded but not to an extent where it looks childish, I'd prefer it to be clean and crisp making it look more professional.

As part of my research for what font to use and what different fonts are possible, I started with the History of Typography as seen in the video below...

From this video, I have learnt a lot about the different types of available and how they came about and what significance they have. It was very useful as part of my research.

The research into typography has shown me how important fonts are in creating a successful brand name as if used correctly it quickly becomes well known and recognized as being associated with a specific brand. This is what I hope to create through choosing a good font for my Digipak and Poster, a font which is unique but at the same easy to read and easily recognizable.

Digipak Research

What is a Digipak?

"Digipak is a patented style of CD, DVD or BD packaging, and is a registered trademark or AGI-Shorewood, an Atlas Holdings LLC Company"
-Taken from Wikipedia

A Digipak is packaging used for CD singles or special editions of CD albums, they typically take a gatefold aka book style with a paperboard or card stock outer binding. This usually includes one or more plastic trays which are capable of holding a CD or DVD. The front of the digipak usually has some aspect of what the artist represents and what their predominate genre is. The digipak is most likely to embody a theme and a message linking to the artists image or the theme of the album, the emphasis is on the artist brand name which leads to an increase in the artists popularity. The digipak should exemplify the artistic and creative approach the artist is taking throughout the music. All aspects of the Digipak, brand image and music video are all interwoven together. The digipak benefits the artist and their music as its promotional aspect within the music industry as it helps bring awareness to artists and their music therefore selling the artist to an audience and encouraging consumers to buy and listen to their music.

Development of my idea of lights!

I really like the idea of using fairy lights and the effect which they create when used properly on camera, so today I found some Christmas lights which we had and I will use these against a back drop and hopefully this will create the same effect! WISH ME LUCK!

here are some of the lights I found:
Displaying photo 1.JPGDisplaying photo 2.JPG

The lights have little blue stars at the bottom which I thought are quite cute and fit with the genre, they may not be able to be seen on camera due to lack of focus on them or they may not be seen due to the type of shot which I use i.e. close-up or mid-shot but we will see I can't wait to try shooting with them and seeing how they come out.

Recce Shots

For my music video I will be using a variety of different locations and I have thought that by using a variety of locations I could get a variety of shots and will have a greater choice when it comes to editing.

The first location which I have chosen is Patsy's house- she is starring in my video so will obviously be there when I need to shoot and it isn't that far from me so I can get there easily when I need to shoot.

These shots are of the front of Patsy's house and it shows the location at which much of my footage will be shot.

This it's the front door and I think that the steps are good to shoot on and I think it'll be good for some of the scenes where the character feels isolated as it's almost as if she's been locked out leaving her completely alone.

The are the steps down to the basement, they are painted all white which means I can use them however I want if I need the angle of them could produce an interesting angle if I decide to use them to shoot on.

Here are some different angles of the inside the basement, I think it fits my theme and genre of the video as it is predominately black and white with hints of bright colours which makes it more girly. It also fits the theme of a music video because as you can see from the shots above there is already some music instruments in there such as the keyboard and there is also music notes painted on the walls which keep with the idea that it is part of the mise-en-scene of a music video.

First day of shooting!

SHOOTING DAY 1:

Today I started shooting some footage for my music video, I started by taking some test shots using a black background using a Nikon D60, these shots helped me see what lighting was effective on camera and how the black background worked for the mood which I wanted to create. After that I started some of the performance shots for the chorus, this I shot several times from various angles. I didn't get as much as I would have liked when shooting but it gave me a few takes and was a good practise for me. Hopefully I can shoot again within the next couple of days and get more footage as ultimately the more takes and variety of shots I have the better.

Here's some of the shots I got from testing the lighting and potentially after editing could be uses for my digipak.

This picture I really like as I think her hair is a prominent feature on it, however I don't think the lighting was strong enough here or was in a position which didn't light my artist in a way which made her stand out the way I wanted her to.

This shot I really like as it's quite well lit, you can fully see her the artist's face and pose will hopefully catch an audience's eye. This picture was helpful in establishing how much light is needed to be fully effective and seen on camera.

Digipak ideas

For my digipak cover I have been doing some research and an effect which I like is the glitter effect which most commonly can be seen on Ellie Goulding's covers.
Here is Ellie Goulding's cover for Bright Lights, as you can see it gives the cover a really girly and almost magical feel which is also created by the title which looks like its glowing.

I research different ways of achieving this and found that although photoshop does have a light and filter effect there is also a practical way of doing this which consists of using fairy lights in the background of the photo.

http://www.winegumsandwatermelons.com/2013/11/tips-on-using-fairy-light-backgrounds-for-christmas-pictures.html

The above website gave me some ideas on how to do this, with tutorials and different ways of creating the effect. This was helpful and even showed different pictures of the effect so this will help when it comes to my digipak photoshoot.

Here, is an example of this style being used it shows how the use of fairy lights looks in a final picture, I really like the picture on the right as clearly there has been additional editing done but I really like the final effect. Hopefully, I can create the same effect.
