Students Work

In class, we viewed students works from the Music Magazine website which helped inspire us for our upcoming music videos. In watching them we could see the final product of a students music video, this also helped us because we were able to see what works well and what didn't work quite so we, another benefit from this was ideas that we hadn't thought of yet. It was interesting to see these videos and see how they compare to the professional videos seen on the a music channels etc.

Here are some of the notes I made whilst watching these videos:

Name of work: Do My Thing

Positive/ Negative points:

- sharp editing, very precise to the beat of the music
- costume changes create different looks and adds to the genre of the song
- there are elements of glamour within the video however the bright colours and the way the song is performed implies that it's not to be taken TOO seriously
-the dance routine is a characteristic of the genre and works well with the video as it adds to the watchability factor however, it could have been neater as it would be performed in a professional music video, also the background shows the creases in the curtains therefore adds to the amateur side of the video
- the boys adds to the genre, as in a rap/ hip hop video it is a genre convention for the males to be surrounded by girls in this pop video they invert the characteristic and surround the girls with male dancers

Things to consider:

I really liked the idea of using split screen which was evident throughout the video. They pulled of this effect very successfully

Name of work: All you need is now

Positive/ Negative points:

- Using the girls to perform a male led song sends out a message of equality between the sexes, this is also emphasized by the costumes  (i.e. they are dressed in suits)

- at the same time the girls portray a glamour and sexualised image

- it is simply shot, using a plain background it also uses a variety of editing techniques which make the video more interesting to watch

-the theme is clear throughout the video and the presentation is neat and organised
- It is simply shot which would have helped in production of the video but the editing is more complex

Things to consider:

By using a females to perform a male vocalist it makes it more interesting for the audience to watch as we don't expect it, this is emphasized by the contrast

Name of work: Anti Love Song
Positive/ Negative points:

-In this video there was a lot of attention on the main artist and not much attention or focus on the band's and background extras' costumes, however, the idea is good

Things to consider:

The use of the background view of the sets showed an alternative way of shooting a video and the use of different set as if they were shooting a movie made it seem more professional

Name of work: Damn (Set Two)

Positive/ Negative points:
-The use of various props and costumes make it more interesting for the viewer and the intertextual references such as the Charlie Chaplin add to the repeat-ability factor and gets people to watch back and enjoy it more because of the different references in it.
- the change in color in the video  and costume changes were good and make the video more interesting to watch
- the video fades out at the end which shows a clear end to the video

Things to consider:

Using a younger version of the lead singer (who's performing the song) helps to present a story from the past and makes the link between the past and the present giving the video validity. The video uses a variety of different techniques such as black and white creating an old movie style to the video, there is also a video within a video however the video keeps with the theme and the bit of cheesy humor adds to the genre.
